Traffic signaling systems have come a long way in terms of technological developments in the last few years. These updates have brought an increased level of safety to the public, and reduce congestion to a large extent.

The newest traffic signaling technologies also eliminate certain commitments to manpower as they are fully capable of handling the traffic on their own.

Realizing the opportunities in this market, Carmanah has completed the acquisition of Spot Devices, a provider of traffic signaling systems, allowing Carmanah to make use of Spot Devices’ Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFB) to provide advanced traffic signaling services to its users.

Carmanah expects this new acquisition to boost its position in the crosswalk and school zone traffic signaling market, and can look to update the features it provides for these product portfolios with this acquisition.

The company looks to reduce its operational expenses now as well.

Carmanah’s solar flashing beacons are being used by clients all over the globe. According to the company, they can withstand the vagaries of harsh weather and are relatively simple to install.

According to Bruce Cousins, Carmanah CEO, the acquisition is well-timed and relevant to the industy; “We believe that this transaction and access to remote-management technology will become a meaningful source of growth for our business in the future. The combined product portfolio and remote-monitoring platform address a market need that we can now answer and positions Carmanah as a market leader in this category,” he said.

The company’s solar PV solution is being picked up by a number of newly interested customers. In 2011, PowerStream, Inc. adopted a 350-kW rooftop solar photovoltaic system from the company, with an order valued at $2 million (CAD).

PowerStream serves customers north of Toronto and in Central Ontario, and is the second-largest electricity distribution company in Ontario.
