It was a relatively slow week for the network management space, but there were still a few headlines of note.
First up, Ixia revealed advancements to its Anue Net Tool Optimizer solution, which offers insight into high-speed service provider and enterprise data center networks. As the number of mobile devices increases, networks have had to expand in terms of bandwidth and scale. These enhancements to Anue NTO offer total network visibility into both physical and virtual networks, allowing mobile carriers and enterprises to track 100GbE network ports with current 1, 10 and 40GbE tracking tools.
"With mobile data traffic forecast to increase by 12 times in the next five years, service providers and large enterprises will have to deploy 100GbE as the backbone of their networks," said Iain Gillott, founder and president at iGR. "The challenge for the service providers and enterprises is to make the switch as cost effective as possible. The ability to upgrade existing solutions to 100GbE and maintain the same level of visibility is key in the industry-wide 100GbE adoption."
In other news, New York City announced that 30 more subway stations now have wireless connectivity, bringing the total number of connected stations to 36. The wireless equipment was installed by Transit Wireless and Boingo Wireless (News - Alert) and offers both wireless data and voice connectivity as well as Wi-Fi access. Currently, only AT&T and T-Mobile are providing wireless coverage, but Sprint and Verizon (News - Alert) coverage should be on the way soon.
Aside from being convenient, this also brings added safety to subway goers as E911 technology allows dispatchers to know when a call is placed underground and the approximate location of the caller.
Lastly, ManageEngine this week made the MSP version of Password Manager Pro available in beta. The MSP edition of PMP allows administrators to manage passwords from a single console, as well as define policies to maintain security. PMP MSP edition also features an audit trail of who has been accessing passwords. All these extra features are crucial for managed service providers, which manage the IT infrastructure of many clients, therefore presenting a higher risk level.
That's all for this week, but check out the Network Management Channel for more news in this space.
