The Cisco Visual Networking Index (VNI) tracks and forecasts the impact of visual networking applications with a detailed global IP traffic forecast. According to the report, annual global IP traffic will be around 1.4 zettabytes by the end of 2017, with half of the traffic being generated with non-PC devices. Wireless and mobile devices will be producing more traffic than wired devices by 2016, and the amount of global mobile data traffic will jump from 2012's 2 percent of total IP traffic to 9 percent by 2017, with 11.2 exabytes per month. These are staggering numbers that will likely keep network administrators up late at night. The strain mobile devices is putting in networks can be managed if the right solution is implemented.

Radware, a recognized global provider of application delivery and application security solutions for virtual and cloud data centers, offers solutions that are critical for today's businesses. Used by more than 10,000 enterprise and carrier customers around the world, it helps organizations adapt with flexible applications designed to meet the complex demands of today's networks.

The company ensures 24x7 availability, security and improved site performance with its Alteon Application Delivery Controller (ADC (News - Alert)). This application addresses many of the mission-critical applications that affect organizations with productivity, business reputation and revenue in virtual and physical data centers with consistent and seamless access from multiple locations.

"For businesses which require users to access their services through web applications, such as retailers and financial institutions - mobile devices put a real strain on their network, particularly on bandwidth consumed - a direct result of how heavy a page is being served. Slower page loads unfortunately results in decreased customer loyalty and satisfaction and directly impacts revenue. Companies can no longer ignore mobile device users and must adapt their business strategy to place a greater priority on ensuring security, availability and low latency for applications," said Prakash Sinha, vice president of ADC Solutions, Radware (News - Alert), in a statement.

The technologies used to improve application delivery include:

  • Application Acceleration, Simplified Application Operation
  • ADC Consolidation and Virtualization
  • Global Load Balancing and Disaster Recovery
  • Bandwidth Management and Rate Shaping, MultiWAN Switching and Bandwidth Management
  • Integrated Security Solutions, XML Acceleration/Security, Web Application Security (News - Alert) and Compliance
  • Guaranteed SIP Delivery
  • Managed Service Delivery
  • XML Acceleration/Security

Mobile devices are overtaking personal computers and with a device that is readily available, users will be online more than ever before working, purchasing and playing. Organizations can't afford any downtime with inefficient networks because even one minute of downtime can translate into huge sums of lost revenue.

According to Radware, companies can take five immediate actions to ensure their websites and applications for mobile devices are optimized: visibility into application performance, automated Web performance optimization technology, application certification, Denial of Service (DoS) protection and application delivery controllers (ADCs).

Sinha also said, “Businesses currently operate under the misconception that their in-house development team or investment in a WAN optimization technology can sufficiently address the challenges that mobile devices bring to their network - but oftentimes, it's not enough."
