Welcome to another Network Management Week in Review. This week, the community saw several interesting service product announcements, business mergers, and technical insights. Here’s your weekly rundown of some of the top stories.

Starting off the week, we saw Swivel Secure, a provider of network security products and solutions, introduce OATH Token support into its multifactor authentication platform. The Open Authentication (OATH (News - Alert)) initiative is a collaborative effort between several IT industry players to establish a strong universal authentication method usable across a host of devices and networks. Combined with its PIN-enabled token-based authentication service, Swivel hopes to provide its customers with a flexible and interoperable access security platform.

In a statement, Chris Russell, chief technological officer at Swivel Secure, said, “Swivel’s intent has always been to provide the most flexible multifactor authentication environment possible by supporting the widest number of deployment options on the market. For most organizations, a tokenless solution represents the most flexible, cost effective and resource efficient way to achieve this. We do, however, recognize that there are exceptions to this rule and today’s announcement enables us to address these market segments also. With this news, Swivel is now the only multifactor authentication solution an organization will ever need.”

IBM (News - Alert), meanwhile, released a series of new systems designed to help managed service providers (MSPs) better leverage private and hybrid clouds. These new systems include IBM PureSystems, Power Systems, Smarter Storage Systems, System x, and Technical Computing. The full article breaks down each of these new systems and the benefits they afford to cloud network service providers. Overall, the systems are meant to help these providers better utilize big data insights, integrate and consolidate network functions and services, and share resources in more efficient ways.

“IBM is uniquely positioned to compete aggressively for public, private and hybrid cloud computing opportunities," said Tom Rosamilia, senior vice president, IBM Systems & Technology Group and Integrated Supply Chain, in a statement. "The new IBM Systems and solutions provide superior efficiency and agility to help clients quickly deploy the right cloud infrastructure that best meet their needs.”

Finally, it was learned that Thoma Bravo, LLC, a private equity investment firm, plans to acquire Empirix, a major provider of network performance visibility and analytics solutions, signing a definitive acquisition agreement this week. Thoma Bravo is known for investing in the application and infrastructure software industry, managing a series of private equity funds representing more than $4 billion. Empirix (News - Alert) believes this acquisition will strengthen the company’s ability to meet the growing application management needs of its customers.

“Its products, strategy and leadership have positioned it for success, and we look forward to accelerating that success through organic growth and strategic acquisition opportunities,” said one managing partner at Thoma Bravo.

Of course, be sure to check out our guest piece on understanding the testing infrastructure conundrum, written by Vasudeva Naidu, Delivery Manager, Financial Services Unit at Infosys (News - Alert). Otherwise, check back next week for more industry news and insights in the Network Management space.
