The network packet broker space was a relatively new area being watched closely by analysts last year and will continue to be on their radar for some time to come. Yet over time it has been proven that network packet brokers (NPBs) are fundamental to empowering businesses to take back control over their infrastructure.

With a network packet broker in place, network operators can achieve higher service availability, lower labor costs for network analysis, lower analysis costs and see greater subscriber and revenue protection.

In the spring of 2012, Gartner (News - Alert) released its “Vendor Landscape for Application-Aware Network Performance Monitoring and Network Packet Brokers” report and made several predictions about the network packet broker segment.

For example, Gartner pointed out that with NetScout (News - Alert) buying Simena in 2011, the long overdue consolidation of the market began.

“This is providing buyers with more choices, and will lead to lower prices,” the report said.

Gartner’s prediction rang true in 2012, as this consolidation occurred for Netscout, as well as being able to sell significantly more devices that an independent Simena was able to do, pointed out Gartner Research Director Jonah Kowall.

Last year, VSS Monitoring, a provider of network packet brokers that offers a systems-based approach to optimizing and scaling the connectivity between network switching and the entire network intelligence ecosystem of analytics, inline security, and WAN acceleration tools, was acquired by Danaher (News - Alert) Corporation. Danaher is a large holding company that includes Fluke Networks, Visual Networks and Arbor Networks.

“These companies can not only help sell additional NPBs in bundled deals, but also provide a tight integration and story around the combined use of technologies,”  Kowall wrote in a blog post. “I look forward to hearing more when the strategies around these May acquisitions formulates, and best of luck to those involved in the transactions.”

Danaher’s acquisition of VSS Monitoring (News - Alert) gives the network packet broker company a “much larger opportunity around network performance monitoring and security,” he added.

Following the acquisition of VSS Monitoring by Danaher, the San Mateo, Calif.-based company continued on its success streak in 2012.

In October, VSS Monitoring rolled out its new solution for SSL inspection at the McAfee FOCUS 12 Security Conference. The products is specifically designed for SSL inspection provides visibility into encrypted communications across LAN, WAN and cloud boundaries. It is based on 1U and 2U network appliances powered by Intel’s Xeon processors and accelerated by Netronome’s flow processors and SSL inspection software.

VSS Monitoring continued to make headlines last month when its vBroker Series of network packet brokerswon the 2012 INTERNET TELEPHONY Product of the Year Award. INTERNET TELEPHONY is touted as being the authority in IP communication since 1998.
