ManageEngine (News - Alert), a provider of real-time IT and network management tools, announced that BMI Healthcare, an independent healthcare provider in the U.K, has delivered annual IT infrastructure management cost savings of at least 70 percent using ManageEngine’s Desktop Central.

Matt Rooney, IT Desktop manager for BMI Healthcare, said, "Effective desktop management is becoming more and more crucial to the entire healthcare industry. The fast-paced environment requires a carefully planned and articulated approach to technological advancements and the ever-evolving threat landscape.”

According to Rooney, the ramifications of a network security breach can be catastrophic in a hospital, so compliance reporting plays a hugely important role in daily operations.

The company turned to Manage Engine’s Desktop Central to gain visibility into the software and devices entering the network and ensure security and compliance.

BMI Healthcare selected ManageEngine's Desktop Central over the Symantec's Altiris (News - Alert), as the healthcare company found Altiris had a complicated back-end SQL database and required heavy upfront investment on customization standpoint.

Further, Altiris also wanted BMI Healthcare engineers to be fluent in SQL reporting, as none of the out-of-the-box reports met their unique regulatory standard requirements. This reduced the visibility into the exact inventory of Desktop estate at BMI Healthcare.

Desktop Central helped the healthcare company address these issues. The solution is ideal for healthcare desktop and network management activities, such as the installation of periodical software updates, weekly patch management, and the delivery of service packs to any Windows-based device including medical equipment, and standardizing desktop interfaces.

Further, Desktop Central helps companies administer company-wide security policies and restrict the use of unsecured foreign devices, such as USB sticks and portable hard drives.

Automating these traditionally manual IT functions frees up the IT team to focus on other business critical IT disciplines and projects, such as network monitoring and security event management.

Deploying Desktop Central BMI Healthcare, which has 69 hospitals and treatment centers, over 10,000 employees and 6,500 IP-enabled devices across the U.K., now ensures visibility into and understanding of its entire IT landscape. Its IT team can now monitor devices including medical equipment across its estate, and administer the required software and security updates, enabling users to continue operating within a secure environment with maximum availability of systems.
