Network equipment and infrastructure solutions provider Ericsson (News - Alert) announced that Mobily, Saudi Arabia’s second-biggest telecoms operator, has selected the company to upgrade its Evolved Packet Core (EPC) networks in the western region of Saudi Arabia.

The telco has selected Ericsson’s SSR 8000 family of smart service routers. Under this contract, Ericsson will upgrade the EPC network to support Long Term Evolution (LTE (News - Alert)) and prepare the network for Voice over LTE (VoLTE).

VoLTE is one of the most important trends underway in the telecom voice market. It is stimulating significant spending both in the wireless infrastructure and in the wireline infrastructure, says a recent report from Dell’ (News - Alert)Oro Group. The success of these services will very likely influence the continued adoption of VoLTE by other operators, the report said.

Ali Eid, President of Ericsson, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, remarked, “As users rapidly adopt new technologies, it is vital for operators to keep their networks up-to-date with dynamic solutions that are capable of efficiently handling increasing bandwidth demands.”

Accordign to Eid, the EPC network solution will equip Mobily with the latest technology to increase data bandwidth, provide an unprecedented customer experience and increase revenues. By providing access to 4G/LTE, the fastest network, Mobily is able to meet growing consumer demands for innovative, complex mobile-broadband services.

The enhanced capacity of the EPC network will help Mobily subscribers access and consume four times more data than the network was previously capable of. They can consume bandwidth-hungry applications and services, while maintaining high quality of experience for all users.

According to Nasser Al-Nasser, chief operations officer at Mobily, selecting Ericsson to upgrade the packet core network enables the company to provide ultra-fast data speeds for consumers in the western region of the Kingdom.

“This partnership not only increases the data capability of our networks fourfold; it also supports our long-term vision of maintaining a highly reliable, efficient and robust network,” Al-Nasser added.

Both companies have been partners since 2005. As part of this agreement, Ericsson will also provide systems integration, design and managed services, extending the scope of the existing partnership.
