Packet Optical Networking supports the IP networking segment by providing a universal aggregation and transport infrastructure that underlies the current and future Ethernet and IP services. Companies like Ciena and Optelian (News - Alert) are engaged in this business.

In one of the latest announcements in the industry, Optelian launched its Packet Optical Networking solution that addresses the exploding demand for packet-based service delivery. The solution enables service providers to deploy TDM-equivalent Ethernet services and an efficient infrastructure for residential broadband, mobile backhaul and enterprise services delivery.

Optelian solutions are based on its FLEX architecture. It delivers services from access to core, passive to packet and 100M to 100G. Intuitive Packet Optical Networking enables service-driven networking, allowing operators to rapidly deliver services while optimizing network capacity, the company said.

"Intuitive Packet Optical Networking combines the advantages of packet networking with WDM, OTN, ROADM (News - Alert) and TDM transport, to enable Service-Driven Networking," said Optelian CEO David Weymouth. "We are changing the game by simplifying provisioning and management of services across these technologies. You provision the network by simply defining services. No Ph.D. required!"

The new portfolio consists of enhanced Ethernet service delivery with intuitive SDN-oriented service-centric management. Leveraging MPLS-TP technology, Optelian's PKX-1640 Packet Networking Card is a 20-port 200 Gb/s state-of-the-art carrier Ethernet switch. It delivers Ethernet service aggregation and multiplexing, extensive OAM, rapid protection switching and MEF (News - Alert)-standardized CE 2.0 services. This builds on Optelian's widely deployed solutions, such as the MPX-9110 Flexible 100G Platform, OMS-7190 and OMS-2190 platforms.

In another related development in the industry, network packet broker provider Net Optics (News - Alert) unveiled its Security-Centric SDN security monitoring solution designed to combat today’s cyber attacks. Net Optics products helps organizations achieve end-to-end visibility to optimize network performance of physical, virtual and private cloud environments, as well as remote branch offices.
