With another major week in terms of network packet broker news come and gone, it's a natural inclination to take stock of the week and note what some of the high points were in the field. That's exactly what the weekend was made for, so let's step right into the thick of things and run down the biggest events in the field with our Week in Review coverage!

First, Liquid Telecom looked to pick up a new weapon against the scourge of distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, and found just the tool for the job in Arbor Networks' (News - Alert) Peakflow SP DDoS Protection Platform. With Arbor Networks' platform in place, Liquid Telecom will be better equipped not only to protect against various availability threats, but also to better understand traffic engineering, peering, and overall performance of its service in its pan-African fiber network.

Next, EMC (News - Alert) stepped in with its recent acquisition of ScaleIO, a move which is said to put a little extra punch in its Flash portfolio. With the Flash market expected to count for $23.1 billion in 2013—up from $20.2 in 2012—the ability to compete in the field comes with plenty of rewards. But with the acquisition of ScaleIO, EMC can offer up scalable server software as part of PCIe Flash cards like the EMC XtremSF line. This combination of software and hardware provides a robust solution in terms of server-side storage, and makes a much greater value than it would have been without.

Entuity (News - Alert) offered the next bit of news, announcing a major extension to the Entuity Oracle (News - Alert) Enterprise Manager (OEM) Plug-in. The new Entuity OEM offers up an advanced event management system, which helps to provide a wider view not commonly found on more individual solutions. Blind spots in the network and similar problems are largely removed, allowing for quicker identification of problems and accompanying moves to repair, meaning that personnel can be more effectively and efficiently used, which commonly results in bottom-line improvement.

Then, Telesur brought in a new pick of its own as the company tapped Centina Systems for its NetOmnia solution for service assurance and service quality management. Since Telesur's primary business is as a telephone service in Suriname, having a quality assurance platform that can also tackle issues of quality management is extremely important overall. NetOmnia offers, right from go, a tool set that can immediately make information about the overall network actionable, including things like network performance analysis tools and visualization tools.

Finally, we had a very important look at the phenomenon of distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, and the five things about same that were absolutely vital to know. Included on the list of things to know about DDoS attacks were who was staging the attacks, what risks were posed to the company as a result of the DDoS—could customers and business be lost? Could servers be at risk from an excess of malware? Knowing the consequences of the attack was also important, as well.

With plenty going on in the field of network packet brokers, it was clear that there was a lot of news to sort through. Our global online community was kept hopping constantly, finding the best news in the field and bringing it back here. So be sure to join us right back here next week for all the biggest news in network packet broker systems, and of course, every weekend for our Week in Review!
