Network Management Week in Review

It's been another big week in network management, and the heartbeat of a lot of businesses has produced plenty of news around its continued operation, protection and success. But with plenty of news in the pipeline, it's worth taking a step back to check out the bigger picture, which is exactly what we'll do with the coming of the weekend and our Week in Review coverage.

First came word from NetCracker, whose vice president Sylvain Seignour brought word that Consolidated Communications was turning to NetCracker (News - Alert) for its lineup of OSS solutions, including network inventory management tools, auto design and assign tools, order management and several others. In the midst of all these different solutions is NetCracker's own OSS engine, which helps the various NetCracker products more readily share information with each other.

Next we had a look at Radware, a company that recently established a position in South Korea, and made a big splash in so doing by taking home Frost & Sullivan's (News - Alert) award for the Application Delivery Company (ADC) of the Year for South Korea for 2013. What prompted the award was Radware's offering in the ADC line, which runs multiple virtual ADC (News - Alert) instances in the midst of dedicated ADC hardware. This in turn allows organizations to better consolidate hardware, reducing redundancy while at the same time allowing performance to stay up to snuff. Its flexibility and scalability make it especially valuable.

GL Communications (News - Alert) brought in the next bit of news, announcing its new Remote Protocol Analyzer (RPA) functionality. RPA systems, according to GL Communications CEO Vijay Kulkarni, are similar to the normal model of protocol analyzer, especially those integrated with T1/E1 analyzers. Thanks to the RPA functionality, systems can now enjoy 24/7 operation without the need for constant attention, as well as remote accessibility, remote and non-intrusive operation, and the ability to perform diagnostic functions, also by remote.

ManageEngine took the next piece of news, announcing the winners of its 2013 “Time To Say Thank You” contest. The “Time To Say Thank You” contest focuses on the efforts of system administrators, who work daily to keep the networks businesses depend on up and running. The contest itself, meanwhile, focused on which company could garner the most actual thanks on Facebook (News - Alert), in the form of either actual thanks posted in comment boxes, or clicks on a “Like” button. The winner of said contest for 2013 was Team FCOOS with 159 total wall comments, and the top prize was a $1,000 Amazon gift card.

Finally, we took a closer look at the results of a recent SolarWinds survey that says that, for the most part, the Big Four in network management software really aren't satisfying most of the customer base. Fully two-thirds of the survey's respondents said that they were paying for features that weren't actually being used, and another 55 percent of respondents said that they would be happy to reduce functionality—especially in fields where it wasn't being used anyway—to reduce costs accordingly. Worse, over half of respondents claimed there was essentially double-charging going on as companies not only had to pay for the software, but had to pay again to train staff in its use.

That was the week that was in network management, and our global online community once again displayed its prowess in finding the biggest news in the field and bringing it right back here. So be sure to join us back here next week for even more news in network management, and of course, every weekend for our Week in Review coverage.
