Ravello Systems Announces General Availability of Its Software-as-a-Service Offering

Ravello Systems, a Cloud Application Hypervisor provider, has launched its Software-as-a-Service (SaaS (News - Alert)) enabling enterprise developers to leverage public clouds to develop and test on replicas of on-premises production environments.

Now with Ravello, developers can spin up as many instances of the application as they need for testing in Amazon Web Services (AWS), Rackspace (News - Alert) or HP Cloud and need not worry about running out of capacity.

Paul Burns, president and IT analyst at Neovise, remarked, “Most enterprises recognize the need to test on replicas of their production applications. However, it requires too much effort to recreate complex multi-tier production environments and there often isn’t enough capacity in the internal data center. The public cloud can solve the capacity issue but it’s still a very different environment usually requiring long migration and automation projects.”

Ravello explained that its Cloud Application Hypervisor enables an enterprise to completely encapsulate a multi-VM application like VMware or KVM and run it in any cloud such as Amazon AWS/EC-2, Rackspace and HP Cloud without making any changes whatsoever. It was designed to make any public cloud look and feel exactly like the enterprise data center from an application’s perspective.

Ravello Systems asserted that for surging workloads like development and testing it does not make economic sense for enterprises to build internal data center capacity for peak usage, since on average, resource utilization may be as low as 1 percent. Even with public cloud features, one cannot solve the infrastructure automation problem and users are forced to conduct testing on-premise. But with its application-centric, usage-based pricing model, it is now economically feasible for enterprises to always develop and test on replicas of production with no capacity constraints.

ScanCafe, a photo digitization and photo concierge service, stated that it used Ravello to develop and test its global media management applications and acknowledged that with Ravello it no longer needed to compromise and was able to get its applications to market faster and with better quality.
