It was a busy week in the Network Packet Broker sector. Here are some of the major stories.

First, let’s turn to Siberia. Actix has successfully implemented ActixOne Geo-located Customer Experience Analytics and Network Optimization for BaikalWestCom, a Rostelecom (News - Alert) subsidiary and mobile network operator in East Siberia. BaikalWestCom is the first operator in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States to implement the ActixOne platform for call tracing and RAN optimization. ActixOne can automatically geo-locate every call from every subscriber. Users can view information by customer, location, handset and service. ActixOne correlates real-time call and cell traces with churn records, customer complaints, network performance, competitive intelligence and social media data.

Next, in the United States Microsoft has called alleged surveillance methods employed by the US government “advanced persistent threats (APTs).” While a number of companies implement network packet brokers to assist in keeping out such threats, such intrusions are generally described as harmful and dangerous.

Now, heading north, Secure Links, an IT services company serving the Canadian market, has announced that it is now part of the Managed Security Service Provider (MSSP) Partner Program initiated by EventTracker. EventTracker solutions provide real-time log management, and change and configuration management to optimize IT operations, detect and deter security breaches, and comply with multiple regulatory mandates.

In addition, Texas-based SolarWinds, a provider of IT management software, has unveiled an upgraded version of its network utilization and bandwidth monitoring solution, SolarWinds NetFlow traffic analyzer (NTA (News - Alert)). The solution features enhanced flow processing speed and detailed one-minute data visibility that can help IT professionals by empowering them with highly specific data with which they can  identify and address network bandwidth problems. The new version of SolarWinds (News - Alert) NTA can process 50,000 flows per second – a 400 percent increase in flow processing speed.

Finally, still in Texas, Michael Dell (News - Alert) finally has gone through a tumultuous year in which his disagreement with activist investor Carl Icahn ended with him wining and re-privatizing the company. After regulators approved the $25 billion buyout deal in October, the company is moving full steam ahead to recapture the lead it had in the market before 2006, when it was the number one PC manufacturer in the world.

But Dell has also increased the company's enterprise market by generating $21 billion outside of its traditional PC business. The latest product introductions include next-generation storage and networking solutions for redefining data center economics and improving campus performance. With these new products Dell Networking solutions will make campus networks more efficient than ever to connect users and make capital expenses 50 percent cheaper. The new hardware also includes the Dell OpenManage system, which is designed to reduce enterprise system configuration time by more than 90 percent.
