A network tap, or more commonly referred to as network intelligence tools, are appliances and probes that work together to both passively and actively optimize the performance and security of a network’s core infrastructure, services and applications in any environment, whether it’s a large corporation, a government agency or a service provider. As networks are only continuing to get more complex, enterprises around the world are seeing a great need to implement this solution.

This week in the space there was an overwhelming amount of news that had one company in the spotlight — VSS Monitoring (News - Alert).

In fact, in a recent article it was revealed that a network tap enables carriers to up the ante significantly on visibility, in addition to increasing efficiency and driving a much better return on investment for monitoring tools. This fact was analyzed when TMC CEO Rich Tehrani spoke with Andy Huckridge (News - Alert) of VSS Monitoring who stated that traditionally, carriers spend around $300,000 on analytic tools; however, they then only leverage around 20 percent of the functionality provided.

“In other words you can use an aggregator to connect to multiple network segments but then you lose link layer visibility as well as vital meta-data such as packet loss, jitter and delay information,” Tehrani added.

Additionally, VSS Monitoring let the world in a little known secret this week — it has successfully completed compatibility testing in the McAfee (News - Alert) Security Innovation Alliance program, earning McAfee Compatible status for its Distributed Series and Traditional TAP product families.

The McAfee Security Innovation Alliance is a partnering program designed to increase the time it takes to get interoperable security products to market, in addition to making it much easier to seamlessly integrate these products within preexisting infrastructures.

“VSS Monitoring has teamed up with McAfee to provide the network visibility, scalability and service assurance that are critical for large customers," said Dean Beaver, VP of Global Alliances, VSS Monitoring, in a press release. "Now that we've successfully completed McAfee compatibility testing, joint customers can be assured of interoperability between our products, as well as significantly increased scale and visibility across enterprise and provider networks."

Last but not least, VSS Monitoring joined the FireEye Global Industry Alliance Program.

As a partner, the network tap provider will enable customers to gain access to best-in-class interoperability, streamlined security operations centers, and a way to secure critical data, intellectual property, and networks against targeted attacks.
