Network virtualization is a comparatively new technology that is being used by technology companies to remove the barriers common to traditional networks. Proving once again that rapid innovation lies at the heart of its business, eBay (News - Alert) has deployed Nicira's Network Virtualization Platform (NVP) in a production OpenStack environment to rapidly test and deploy new Web applications.
In a press release, the network virtualization firm, Nicira explained that eBay has been using NVP to provide on-demand network resources to hundreds of projects central to the company's Web products and services.
The eBay R&D cloud is deployed in an eBay data center, where Nicira's robust virtual networking capabilities support eBay's increased agility requirements. Nicira NVP offers multi-tenant network scalability and enterprise security, flexible workload placement and mobility, and eliminates error-prone manual reconfiguration, all challenges faced by large-scale cloud operations. With Nicira NVP at its disposal, ebay is now able to move its R&D projects rapidly from development and test into production in minutes.
“NVP is helping top technology companies like eBay redefine computing through cloud. Nicira's NVP solution helps simplify and accelerate how developers and operations teams at eBay gain rich infrastructure capabilities and onboard critical applications,” VP of Marketing for Nicira, Alan Cohen (News - Alert), explained in a statement.
“Rapid innovation lies at the heart of eBay's business. Working with Nicira we have removed the last big barrier, the network, from creating computing resources on demand. We can now provide these resources in a minute versus hours or days. Not only do our best minds create new products and services more quickly, but we can also be more efficient and greener with our computing resources,” Cloud Architect at eBay, JC Martin commented in a statement.
Last month, VMware, Inc., a provider of virtualization solutions and products, signed a definitive agreement to acquire Nicira Networks, for approximately $1,050 million in cash plus approximately $210 million of assumed unvested equity awards. Both the entities are based in the U.S.Want to learn more about the latest in communications and technology? Then be sure to attend ITEXPO West 2012, taking place Oct. 2-5, in Austin, TX.
