China Unicom Receives a Flood of Pre-orders for iPhone 4

BEIJING, Sep 19, 2010 (SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX) -- By 5pm, September 17, China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd. (NYSE: CHU, SEHK: 0762, and SHSE: 600050) has taken about 50,000 pre-orders for Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL)'s iPhone 4, which was put on sale in China officially in the morning on the day.

Users have to pay CNY 5,880 for the 16GB version of the iPhone 4 and CNY 6,999 for the 32GB version to get the iPhone 4 and two-year service package services with China Unicom, according to a statement posted on the website of the leading telecommunications carrier.

Hundreds of Chinese braved the pouring rain and lined up for hours outside Beijing's Apple store, eager to get their hands on an iPad -- the first to be officially sold in China.

Stores in Beijing and Shanghai and authorized retailers around the country began offering the Wi-Fi model of the device, millions of which have already been sold in the US and a dozen other countries.

China is the world's largest Internet market and gray-market iPads and iPad wannabes have been on sale here for months. Gray-market iPads can cost up to USD1,000.
