Planet Fitness offering $1 memberships at new Shelby gym

SHELBY, Nov 05, 2010 (The Star - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Want to lose 20 pounds at a modern new gym and only pay $1? At the city's new Planet Fitness, you can.

The facility is offering an exclusive pre-grand opening special for prospective members. Membership will cost only $1 until Dec. 17 for people who arrange a club membership during sales time.

The sale runs until Dec. 10, with presale hours scheduled 10 a.m, to 7 p.m. Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Planet Fitness' new facility, which is located on 1659 E. Dixon Blvd., has about 60 pieces of cardio equipment and offers several specialized workout programs, such as a 30-minute express workout and offers 10 different weight machines and step-up boxes.

Another unique program Planet Fitness offers is the Cardio Theater.

"We have 16 42-inch TVs that are hanging in plain view from our cardio equipment; you can actually plug into any of those TVs and hear the film while working out," said Zach Kennedy, the gym's manager.

Planet Fitness has two memberships available, a regular no-commitment membership for $10 a month, which can be cancelled at any time without any penalties. The other is the black-card membership, which costs $19.99 per month and offers unlimited tanning and massage bed usage, half off all drinks in the beverage cooler and can be used at Planet Fitness gyms nationwide.

Planet Fitness offers a new workout experience for its members based around what the business terms a "judgment-free zone." "What that means is we want to create a completely judgment-free workout area for anyone and everyone," said employee Tommy Baldrige. "We don't cater to bodybuilders, we're here for people who want to get in shape and stay in shape. We create a comfortable atmosphere for those people." Planet Fitness prides itself on making working out easy and workable for busy lifestyles, and working around its customers' schedules rather than expecting them to arrange their exercise around the gym's agenda or stumbling into a workout routine without any assistance or guidance.

The free group fitness training classes, which come with memberships, aim to take care of this problem.

"We sit down with each of our members and develop a plan for them," said Kennedy.

Kennedy added that the majority of Planet Fitness members are new to gyms, so if you've never been a gym member before, don't sweat it -- everyone is welcome.
