U. of Phoenix throws open its doors

Apr 30, 2011 (The Arizona Daily Star - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The local University of Phoenix campus is having an open house today to show off its remodeled student center and offer job-search workshops.

The Tucson campus is home to about 1,000 college students, mainly studying nursing, counseling, education and business.

The new center is a place for them to study individually or to do group work, which the school emphasizes. The center also has a TV lounge and about 40 computers.

Students need these resources to be successful, said campus director Gregg Johnson. Sometimes students who take classes online need a place to go for homework. For others, the center means access to a better computer or tutoring, he said.

UP is also offering free workshops today on resume writing and dressing for a job interview. Visitors also can take part in mock job interviews and get feedback for improvement.
