(AME Info (Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) July 27--PAKISTANI STUDENTS IN UAE TO GET SCHOLARSHIPS: A memorandum of understanding has been signed by the Pakistan Association Dubai (PAD) and Skyline University College Sharjah to provide scholarships to Pakistani students from across the UAE, Khaleej Times has reported. According to the agreement, the scholarship will be effective from this month to February 2012 for first two terms.



DEWA SUMMER PROGRAMME ATTRACTS 93 STUDENTS: Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has received 93 students from various schools and universities in its summer training programme, Khaleej Times has reported. The training programme aims to provide the students with the necessary skills and positive attitude and includes several field programmes.

OPEC LAUNCHES EDUCATIONAL BOOK FOR YOUNGER GENERATION: The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) launched a book about the oil industry to educate the younger generation on the importance of the industry, Saudi Gazette has reported. The book, entitled 'I Need to Know: An Introduction to the Oil Industry and OPEC,' addresses people who will become the business and political leaders of tomorrow, OPEC secretary general, Abdalla Salem El-Badri, said.


ADEC CONSIDERS SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS ON SCHOOL BUSES: Abu Dhabi Education Council (Adec) is looking into the possibility of installing surveillance cameras in the school buses in cooperation with Emirates Transport to monitor and ensure safety of the students while in the buses, Wam has reported. The study includes sending an SMS message to guardians informing them about time a student has boarded the bus. The service will include students in early school stages, the regulator said.

UNIVERSITY OF TOULOUSE TO OPEN OMAN BRANCH NEXT YEAR: The Omani higher education ministry has announced France's University Toulouse 1 Capitole is to begin operations in Oman next year, Muscat Daily has reported. The university will comprise three colleges - a college of law, of economics and of management. "English will be the medium of instruction at the university, which will also offer French language courses," Latifa Baba Aissa, the university project manager, said.

UAE CARRIES OUT MAINTENANCE ON SCHOOLS: The UAE education ministry has launched maintenance work projects in various schools across the UAE, Wam has reported. The works include 40 schools in seven educational districts: seven schools in Dubai, six in Sharjah in addition to the Sharjah educational office's seven schools, five schools in Ajman, four in Umm Al Quwain, four schools in Fujairah, and seven in Ras Al Khaimah.

BRITISH COUNCIL LAUNCHES LEADERSHIP PROGRAMME IN UAE: The British Council has launched in the UAE a programme designed to facilitate leadership networking and exchange in the cultural and creative industries, Gulf News has reported. Participants in the Cultural Leadership International (CLI) should be aged between 24 and 40 and already work in the creative sector with at least three years experience and have the ability to demonstrate their capacity to advance in their career and take over leadership positions in the future.

ABU DHABI GIVES APPROVAL TO 60 PRIVATE SCHOOLS TO RAISE FEES: Sixty private schools in Abu Dhabi have received approval from the Abu Dhabi Education Council (Adec) to raise their fees in the next academic year, Khaleej Times has reported. The regulator approved an average increase of 6.6 percent in tuition fees, while the permitted hike in fees for books, transportation and uniform averages 5.3 percent, 12.3 percent and 0.7 percent, respectively. Thirty-one of the schools are from Abu Dhabi, 24 from Al Ain and five from the Western Region.

ADU EXTENDS INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME: Abu Dhabi University's (ADU) has launched a summer internship program organised by the Career Development Department to help more than 200 students find essential work experience and make the transition to the labour force once they complete their university studies, Wam has reported. Landscape Architecture was introduced to this year's six-week training, enabling the first batch of student-trainees to gain work experience in this field, while there were also opportunities in more traditional fields of engineering, auditing, banking, IT, public relations, marketing, architecture, interior design and oil and gas.

ABU DHABI SCHOOLS TOLD TO RECORD SOURCES OF FOOD IN CANTEENS: Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority (ADFCA) has said the new guidelines for school canteens in the emirate require maintaining records of the sources of food they serve to students, Gulf News has reported. "School canteens have to keep detailed files of foods being sold as it will help the food safety inspectors to trace the source of food in the event of any untoward incident like food poisoning," Mohammad Abdulla Al Fardan, deputy director of communication and community service at ADFCA, told the daily.

QATAR PETROCHEMICAL LAUNCHES SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME: Qatar Petrochemical Co (Qapco) has launched a scholarship programme aimed at encouraging young Qatari nationals to specialise in the various technical disciplines essential to the petrochemical and gas industry, Gulf Times has reported. The scholarships are available for recently graduated secondary school students who have met the required English level (TOEFL 550 or equivalent), 80 percent or higher overall secondary GPA and have met the required level of scores in the Qapco scholarship tests.

UAE COLLEGES TO OFFER SPECIAL EDUCATION COURSES: Zayed University and Abu Dhabi University are set to launch postgraduate courses in special education this autumn to address the shortage of special-needs teachers across the UAE, The National has reported. Each of the two-year master programmes aims to train some 25 specialists to work in schools and centres in different parts of the country. Zayed University will introduce the master's degree in special education in November at its campuses in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

ABU DHABI ISSUES GUIDELINES FOR SCHOOL CANTEENS: The Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority, in cooperation with Abu Dhabi Health Authority and Abu Dhabi Educational Council, has certified a new guide for school canteens in the emirate for the 2011-2012 academic year, Gulf News has reported. According to the new rule, junk foods, soft drinks, foods high in fat and sugar and processed meat such as sausages, hotdogs, shawarma, nuggets and burgers cannot be served to students. Foods that will be allowed, provided they meet the required conditions include low fat milk, butter-free popcorn, cereals that are free of dyes and fortified with iron, stuffed pies and manakish not exceeding 52 gms. Rice, noodles and pasta will also be allowed provided noodles does not contain sodium glutamate and not more than 220 ml.

ABU DHABI UNIVERSITY OFFERS SCHOLARSHIP GRANTS TO UAE STUDENTS: Abu Dhabi University (ADU) has introduced five scholarship programs and financial aid packages to help students in the UAE with limited financial resources pursue higher education studies, Wam has reported. The four-year HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Scholarship and the Chairman's Scholarship cover 100 percent of each student's tuition and fees and are awarded to students who can demonstrate outstanding academic records and excellent personal traits.

NYU ABU DHABI AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS TO UAE STUDENTS: NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) has announced the 24 inaugural recipients of the Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Scholarship for Outstanding High School Students, Wam has reported. These Abu Dhabi-based Emirati high school students are participating in the newly launched NYUAD Summer Academy, a two-year summer program designed to prepare young students for entry into top-tier international universities. The program offers early exposure to the academic standards, norms, ethics, and values appropriate to the culture of leading international universities.

GOOGLE TO LAUNCH MENA STUDENT AMBASSADOR PROGRAMME: In line with Google's commitment to empower Egypt's academic community with knowledge, infrastructure and tools to help the country's future leaders make the most of access to information, the company will launch their Google Student Ambassador Program for Mena. The event will take place from July 24 - 28. 73 ambassadors from across the region will be trained on Google products, developer's tools and be provided with an overview of Google's university programs.

ABU DHABI STUDENTS TO GAIN SKILLS IN VIDEO GAME DESIGN: The Abu Dhabi Education Council, chip maker Advanced Micro Devices and the AMD Foundation have entered into a partnership to enhance science, technology, engineering and mathematics (Stem) skills among teens in Abu Dhabi, Gulf News has reported. According to the deal, 10 teachers and 77 Emirati students in Grades nine to 12 are to take part in game design workshops and teacher training sessions. The workshops will provide students with techniques to further develop their Stem skills, critical thinking and problem solving abilities. The programme also guides teachers on how to best implement these Stem-building strategies in classrooms around the emirate.

SAUDI ARABIA TO RESTRUCTURE HEALTH COLLEGES: The Saudi cabinet has approved restructuring of health colleges and institutes at universities across the kingdom, Saudi Gazette has reported. According to the decision, a total of 39 health colleges and institutes for men and women in 15 universities that are affiliated to the health ministry are to be transferred to the ministry of higher education.

TOTAL ABU AL BUKHOOSH AND VEDC TO SET UP ABU DHABI ACADEMY: The Vocational Education Development Centre (VEDC) has signed an agreement with Total Abu Al Bukhoosh to set up a joint Academy in Abu Dhabi to train UAE nationals to work as operators in the oil and gas fields in the emirate, Wam has reported. According to the agreement, Total Abu Al Bukhoosh is to provide the academic programme and oil and gas experts. Total will also provide laboratories and teaching aids as well as salaries and health insurance to the students.

BOEING SPONSORS OMAN TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAMME: Boeing has sponsored an eight-day programme to train teachers and school supervisors in Muscat in techniques designed to maximise early learning, Times of Oman has reported. Organised by Dubai-based Action Care and supported by the Omani Women's Association, the 'Start Early' programme focuses on the needs of young children up to six years of age. Participants were trained in techniques such as learning through play, early learning, character development and behaviour management and communications skills.
