Zaharis, George John Davis Bailey John Davis Bailey, 86, of Charleston passed away on Wednesday, September 7, 2011, in Prince Williams Hospital in Manassas, Va. John was born in Charleston on December 22, 1924, to the late O.E. and Sue Carr Bailey. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his loving wife of almost 55 years, Joyce Ann Palmer Bailey; sister, Rose Elizabeth Bailey Leftwich; and his brother-in-law, Shirley A. Leftwich. John retired from the 130th Air National Guard in December 1984. He was a veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict, and spending almost two years in Germany. He also traveled throughout the years with the guard to many parts of the world, with his last big trip in November 1984 being sent to New Zealand. He came back home and retired on his birthday. John was a member of St. Marks United Methodist Church, Charleston, Kanawha Masonic Lodge No. 20, Scottish Rite Bodies, and Beni Kedem Shrine. After retirement, he spent time driving his children back and forth to the Shrine hospital. He enjoyed being with his kids. John was also an avid deer hunter. In his younger days, he loved to get all his buddies together and take off for Webster County, where the fun would begin. He also enjoyed spending weekends with his family, in that area. John is survived by his daughter, Susan Osborne, and her husband, Marshall; grandson, Jacob Lee; and granddaughter, Rachel Elizabeth Osborn, all of Fairfax, Va. John is also survived by his special friends, who came in to his life after the passing of his wife three and a half (3 1/2) years ago, Betty and Bobby Olson and Archie Walker. They have been such a blessing to our family. John had many friends and was loved by everyone who came in contact with him. He will be sadly missed by all. Dorothy Marie Broughton Dorothy Marie Broughton, 76, of Danville was born January 1, 1935, and died on September 8, 2011. She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel Earl and Myrtle Bailey Chambers; and husband, William "Junior" Broughton. She was a lifetime member of both the VFW Auxiliary and the Civil Air Patrol. Margaret Lee Brown Margaret Lee Brown, 85, of Dry Branch went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 10, 2011, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston. Margaret was born in Dry Branch on November 20, 1925, to the late Ira and Mary Pomroy Workman. She was a homemaker and a member of the Christ Temple Church at Winifred. She was preceded in death by her husband, George O. Brown; son, George Edward Brown; daughters, Barbara Ellen Saadation and Bertha Kidd. Howard "Wayne" Fannin Howard "Wayne" Fannin, 60, passed away on Tuesday, September 6, at the Cleveland Clinic following an extended illness. He was born and raised in Montgomery and had lived in Massillon, Ohio, for the past 24 years. He was the son of the late Melvin and Elizabeth Pettitt Fannin. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Jerry and Gary Fannin. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and Navy during the Vietnam era. He worked at New Castle Refractories/Resco Products and attended First Assembly of God, where he volunteered in the soup kitchen and food pantry. He worked the Obie balloon crew for the Massillon Tiger Swing Band. Frances Bragg Lanham Frances Bragg Lanham, 86, of Scott Depot passed away on Wednesday, September 7, 2011, at Hubbard Hospice House after a prolong illness of Alzheimer's. Frances worked as a real estate agent with ERA Realty in Teays Valley. She was a member of Darlington Methodist Church. She enjoyed crafting and gardening, but her passion was the outdoors. She loved nature. Frances was born in Hinton and moved to Charleston to attend secretarial school after graduation. Preceding her in death were her husband, Keith Rae Lanham; parents, Homer and Pearl Bragg; three sisters, Pauline, Maycle, Juanita; and one grandson, Eric Burdette. She is survived by her daughter, Sherrie Burdette of South Charleston; son, Craig Lanham of Beckley; and two grandchildren, whom she adored very much, Lee Burdette and Stephanie Lanham. Mays, 92, of Huntington passed away Friday, September 9, 2011, in the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House. Carolyn McCune Carolyn McCune of Parkersburg passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, September 6, 2011, after a most valiant battle with cancer. She was born in Fairmont and graduated from East Fairmont High School, Fairmont State University and WVU with an M.A. in journalism. She taught in the Wood County school system for 33 years. She is survived by her husband, Roger, and was preceded in death by a son, Andrew, who passed away on July 18, 2010. She was the beloved daughter-in-law of Earl and Erma McCune of Ivydale and a wonderful sister-in-law to Sandra and Roger Rice of Elyria, Ohio, and Boyd and Gina McCune of Charleston. In addition, she was a most loved aunt to several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her mother; a sister and brother-in-law; and an uncle. She also leaves a special friend, Dixie Love Jarvis of Procious, who brought much joy and laughter to her through cards and letters for the past several years. Although they met only once for a brief time, they became lifelong friends. Carl Lee Meadows Sr. Carl Lee Meadows Sr. left us on September 4, 2011, after suffering a fatal heart attack. He was born in Marmet, West Virginia, on September 15, 1939, the youngest son of Lawrence Otto and Clara Frances Bright Meadows. He brought his family south to Texas in 1961 and transplanted them to Sunshine, Louisiana, in 1971, when "Mr. Scurlock asked him to take a temporary post, not to be longer than one year." The temporary post became home and he retired from Ashland Oil Company's St. Gabriel terminal in 1992. Though retirement was a difficult transition for him at first, he quickly became a popular go-to person and was never void of projects and special requests. A resource for so many, his knowledge and experience will long survive through those he taught, not in a classroom, but through real-life experience. To those who loved him most, he was always just what was needed, when it was needed - a magician, a handyman, a repairman, a toymaker, a storyteller extraordinaire, and the list goes on, but most of all, our rock in hard times. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Lewis "Bob" Meadows and Edgar "Ed" Meadows; and a brother-in-law who had a special place in his heart, Charles Wise. Janet Lee Priestley-Dent Janet Lee Priestley-Dent, 85, of Alum Creek passed away on Monday, September 5, 2011, at Teays Valley Center, Putnam County, after a long illness. Janet was born in Tango on October 18, 1926, daughter of the late Wilburn Chapman Priestley Jr., and Alberta Jean Quigley. She was a retired personnel director of the WV Public Service Commission. Janet was a lifelong resident of Alum Creek and a member of the Forks of Coal Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as a youth director. She was a graduate of Duval High School. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Forrest Bertholomew Priestley; brother-in-law, Rex R. Hill; and sister-in-law, Joyce Ann White-Priestley. Janet was a loving mother and an avid gardener. She loved to travel and visit family. Joyce Ann Stavrakis Our beautiful mother and wife, Joyce Ann Stavrakis, 76, fulfilled her life on Earth and left to take her place in Heaven on September 8, 2011. She passed away bravely at home in the arms of her husband and presence of her four children. Joyce was born on November 12, 1934, the seventh of fourteen children born to the late Cal and Quinnie Milam of Montcoal. She was married on May 24, 1952, in Oak Hill to Mitchell M. Stavrakis of Whitesville. Family was the most important thing in her life and she dearly loved her husband, daughters, sons, grandsons, granddaughters, great- grandson, brothers and sisters. Mom touched many lives during her time and will be remembered for her Christian beliefs and how she helped others, especially the less fortunate. Mom's work revolved around her talent for cooking, starting with her mother-in-law, Addie at the Homestead Restaurant, Whitesville. Later, she worked at Frozen Camp Elementary School, Senior Citizen Center, Meals on Wheels and Head Start, all in the Jackson County area. She enjoyed participating in various clubs and activities that centered around her children, including Brownies, Cub Scouts and 4- H. Mom liked to attend her sons' high school football games, and watch WVU football and NASCAR races. She was a member of the Mill Creek Baptist Church, where she was formerly a Sunday school teacher and youth fellowship leader. She retired to Oak Hill, Fla., with her husband for 10 years, and then returned to West Virginia to spend more time with her family. Mom worked hard to provide extra for her children, budgeting her family dollars wisely. We all love and will miss her, see you in Heaven, Mom. Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Mitchell M. Jon was a member of Elkview Baptist Church and also frequently attended Maranatha Fellowship. He was a PGA golf professional and instructor at Berry Hills Country Club. He was the 2003 WV PGA Seniors Champion and a Class A PGA Golf Professional. Jon was the former Head Golf Professional at Berkley Hills CC, Lake Arrowhead CC and Kanawha Country Club. Numerous times, he was top five finisher in the WV State Open. He also won the Tri-State head pro assistant pro tournament. Jon was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Zeonobia Myers Stricker. He is survived by wife, Julia A. Stricker; sons, Joshua Stricker, and Luke Stricker; stepsons, Davy Perkins and Jonah Perkins; stepdaughter, Nikki Perkins; brother, Robert Stricker and wife, Fran Stricker; and grandchild, Ryan James Ratto. George Zaharis George Zaharis, 64, of Holiday, Fla., passed away August 31, 2011, at Bay Pines Hospice in St. Petersburg, Fla., after a short illness. He was born June 6, 1947, in Charleston to the late Gus and Penelope Zaharis. George served in the U.S. Navy from 1967 to 1971. He graduated from the University of Charleston and taught computer science courses at George Washington High School. He was also previously employed by WTIP Radio station. After retiring to Florida, George taught basic computer skills and software applications to many organizations. George is survived by his brother, James; and sister-in-law, Ann, of Tampa, Fla.; his sister, Neena Z. Davis; and brother-in-law, Jeff of Barboursville; his nieces, Alissa Molina of Tampa, Fla., Julianne Zaharis of Waterville, Maine, Tiffany Smith of Hendersonville, Tenn.; his nephew, Mark Davis of Lubbock, Texas.
