Public-Private Partnership Plans May 30 Kickoff of 'ECEWorks!'LOS ANGELES --(Business Wire)-- First 5 LA has joined forces with university academicians, local preschool education experts and Los Angeles business leaders, to undertake a major multi-year effort to raise the professional standing and earnings of nearly 41,000 local women and men they believe are critical to the growth and vitality of the L.A. County economy due to their work in childcare and preschool education. First 5 LA will announce the launch of ECEWorks! on Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at the UCLA Anderson School of Management (UCLA Campus Building B., Room B1.17, Westwood Plaza, Los Angeles, CA (News - Alert) 90095). First 5 LA has teamed with UCLA Anderson School of Management, UCLA Forecast, Los Angeles Universal Preschool (LAUP) L.A. County Office of Education (LACOE) and L.A. Area Chamber of Commerce to put their combined weight behind a campaign to nurture, strengthen and expand L.A. County's childcare and preschool workforce. Representatives from UCLA Anderson School of Management, Los Angeles Universal Preschool, L.A. County Office of Education and UCLA Forecast will join First 5 LA at their public-private partnership announcement. ECEWorks! is a public outreach effort of First 5 LA's Early Care and Education Career Development Policy Project. ECEWorks! will highlight the professional work of L.A. County's nearly 41,000 childcare workers and prschool teachers. It will focus attention on their critical role in providing childhood learning, comprehension and social development to hundreds of thousands of L.A. County children aged 0 to 5 each year. ECEWorks! intends to show the economic might of L.A. County's ECE workforce. In 2011, childcare centers, licensed family childcare homes and licensed preschools contributed $1.7 billion to the L.A. County economy. ECE is a growth industry. It tops legal services, hotels, women's retail clothing stores and other small businesses in terms of total L.A. County employment. But despite the ECE field's economic standing, L.A. County lacks enough career childcare workers and preschool teachers to meet the region's growing demand for childcare services. Hampering hiring efforts is the fact that ECE workers earn far less than their teaching counterparts in K-12 education. ECEWorks! is an effort to change how ECE workers are viewed by the public and policymakers by developing a multi-part strategy to increase the total number of career childcare workers and preschool teachers in L.A. County, and mounting a focused campaign to raise their childcare and preschool teacher compensation to encourage continuing education, professionalism and to promote career longevity in the field of early care and education.
