The National Weather Service (NWS) is conducting market research for replacement of the current SIGMET RCP8/RVP8 radar receiver and signal processor throughout the fleet of 160+ WSR-88D (a.k.a. NEXRAD) weather radars. These components have become obsolete and will not be supported by the manufacturer after December, 2015. The replacement system must be available for testing in 2014, and be ready for production in 2015. The replacement system shall control the transmitter, pedestal, and power systems, along with monitoring various sensors and switches for alarms and performance data. The replacement system will input 2 receive IFs for Dual Polarization (DP), digitally filter and create IQ data for both data streams, and then process the IQ data into radial moments and DP variables for transmission to the Radar Product Generator. GENERAL: The minimum requirements of the replacement system include: 4 IF inputs at 57.5491MHz with SMA connectors: COHO, Radiated Burst Pulse Sample, Horizontal IF, and Vertical IF Digital Matched Filtering from 100KHz to 700KHz Minimum 93dB Dynamic Range with 600KHz matched filter bandwidth; input power of at least +23dBm shall not cause damage Shall not use Automatic Gain Control Data acquisition minimum 16 bit 100MHz Phase locking to burst pulse Access to I/Q data for archiving Ability for the government to work with raw I/Q for maintenance and scientific investigation Calibrations Noise measurements Troubleshooting routines Execute NEXRAD Volume Control Patterns (VCPs); allows calibrations between VCPs and the ability for the NWS to design and insert these calibrations. Output 8 triggers with 50nsec timing accuracy.
