Southern announces 2012 Shell family scholarships


MUD FORK, Sep 30, 2012 (The Logan Banner - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College is pleased to announce the 2012 recipients of The Shell Family Scholarship. The Shell Family Scholarship was established in partnership with the Southern West Virginia Community College Foundation in 2008, according to Vice President for Development and Southern Foundation Liaison, Ronald E. Lemon.



Established by native Logan Countian and Huntington resident, Robert Shell Jr., his wife Lena, mother Doris and other Shell family members, the scholarship honors the Shell family efforts to encourage area students to pursue higher education. The award is a designated for students planning to graduate from Southern with plans to continue their educational goals at Marshall University.

Mr. Shell is chairman and CEO of Guyan International, a privately held holding company whose Permco Division is internationally recognized. He has also chaired and directed several companies throughout the world, which varied from banking to manufacturing mining equipment and real estate.


A well-known philanthropist, he also shares his time serving on numerous civic boards, including the United Way of the River Cities, Huntington Boys and Girls Club, The Cabell Huntington Hospital Foundation, United Huntington Industries, the Marshall Artists Series and the Clay Center for the Arts & Sciences.

His commitment to education and area youth has led him to serve as chairman on the Marshall University Board of Governors. He formally served on the board of the West Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges and the University of Charleston. He was inducted into the Marshall University Business Hall of Fame in 1999 and in 2004 was honored by having the new Southwestern Regional Juvenile Justice Center in Barboursville named after him.

Shell has been quoted as saying; "I believe all too often that children are left behind academically and in other ways simply because they didn't have the support they needed. Anything that encourages the support of children's activities and growth and education is really important to all of us in the long run." The 2012 Shell Scholarship recipients are: --Kelsey Starr of Cora is a 2012 graduate of Logan High School where she was active in chorus. She plans to pursue a career in elementary education.

--Katelyn Lee of Logan is a 2012 graduate of Logan High School. While attending LHS she participated in community activities, including, the Summer Reading Program and community clean-up. She plans to major in English.

--Justin Tomblin, Chelsey Workman and Whitney Hall are past recipients being awarded second year scholarships. All three plan to pursue careers in teaching.

"We are thrilled to award these scholarships to some of the brightest young students in our area," said Lemon.
