Chief hopes sketch leads to arrest

MERIDIAN, Oct 13, 2012 (The Meridian Star - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- That is why whenever there are crimes against children that are reported, police officers, not that they don't pursue all crimes with equal energies, tend to really focus on solving the case.

Early Saturday morning in the 1500 block of 22nd Avenue Heights, a 14-year-old girl reported to patrol units that she had to fight off an attempted kidnapping. A sketch of the suspect, described as a white male in his 20s with a skinny build, was released Tuesday afternoon by officials of the Meridian Police Department in hopes someone might recognize the man.

"We don't have an arrest in this case yet and we are continuing the investigation," said MPD Chief James Reed. "We are working hard on this one." The suspect is said to have semi curly brown hair, a goatee and blue eyes. The suspect may have had a tattoo of a cross on his left arm. He was wearing a black shirt and blue jeans with a hole in one knee at the time of the alleged incident.

According to the victim, the suspect, who was seen driving a Ford truck, approached her on foot near the street and grabbed her. The victim was able to fight off her attacker and escape by running away from him. Witnesses in another vehicle that came by at that time stated the suspect got back in the truck and fled the scene.

The victim was taken to a Meridian hospital where she was treated for minor injuries and then released.

The truck is believed to be an XLT model Ford pickup with an American Flag sticker and a sticker of an eagle on the back window.

If you have information about this incident or know this individual you are urged to call Crime Stoppers at (601) 485-1860.
