Encoding.com Announces First Universal Closed Captioning Solution

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 18, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Encoding.com today announced the addition of universal closed captioning support to the company's expanding suite of public and private cloud encoding solutions for broadcasters and VOD providers.

A comprehensive feature set enables users to extract, inject, copy and mux closed caption tracks into various digital video formats required for iOS and STB platforms, or alongside as output sidecar (text) files required for Android and web delivery. Encoding.com's solution also supports the extraction of standard closed caption tracks from source videos with an option to convert them into sidecar files. Customers can copy closed caption or timed text tracks from source videos to output videos. Additional features include the capability to mux a sidecar file (in SRT or SCC format) with a source video to encode a valid closed caption track into output videos.

"We are particularly proud of what this offering will mean in terms of empowering video distributors with the first feature rich and easy-to-use solution for delivering closed captioning to all devices," explained Greggory Heil, CEO of Encoding.com. "As an increasing number of broadcasters and VOD providers implement closed captioning workflows to achieve compliance with the Video Accessibility Act or to focus on expanding their audience, Encoding.com hopes to automate and simplify those efforts." The challenge for broadcasters to update their long-form video catalogues to include closed captioning has recently gained much additional attention following recent compliance announcements from such large players as Amazon, YouTube and Netflix. "The demand for universal closed captioning support has skyrocketed for several reasons," explains Heil. "In addition to legal compliance deadlines, publishers are eager to reach viewers who depend on closed captioning to follow televised commentary in a noisy sports bar or who prefer to silently watch a news update on their mobile device while riding a crowded bus."
