Woman arrested for robbery after trying to steal food and assaulting store employees

Oct 27, 2012 (Odessa American - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A 52-year-old Denver City woman was charged with robbery after, law enforcement officials said, she assaulted store employees after they tried to stop her from stealing $30 worth of food.

Suzanne McMahan, 604 N. Washington Ave., Denver City, was being held Friday at the Ector County Detention Center on a $35,000 bond.

Odessa Police officers were dispatched around 3:17 p.m. to the Lowe's Supermarket, 826 W. Clements St., after they received a call of a shoplifter that was also assaulting employees, Odessa Police spokeswoman Cpl. Sherrie Carruth said.

Officers were told McMahan was seen by a store employee placing items in her shopping basket and then placing items such as Oscar Meyer ham, cheese, summer sausage, bacon, and ox tails, in her purse, Carruth said.

When finally confronted, McMahan reportedly threw her purse at the employee and ran out of the store. The employee then ran after McMahan and caught up to her, and McMahan punched him in the chest, Carruth said.

A second employee and store manager also tried to assist in detaining McMahan, who then proceeded to punch and spit at them while telling them she had a gun, Carruth said. Police did not find a weapon on her when they arrived on the scene.

Carruth said the total price of the items McMahan reportedly tried to take was priced at $30.01.
