Time Warner increases customers' Internet speeds [The Kansas City Star]

(Kansas City Star (MO) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Dec. 15--Time Warner Cable said its Internet customers, including those in the Kansas City area, will see faster download speeds beginning this month without having to pay more.

The bump essentially moves most subscribers up to the speeds the next higher level of service had been receiving.

Buyers of the company's Standard Internet service, the most widely purchased level of service, will start to see the maximum download speeds that its Turbo subscribers have been receiving. Turbo customers will see new higher maximum speeds, too.

Similarly, Basic subscribers will move up to the speeds that Standard subscribers were receiving, and Lite subscribers will see speeds a bit faster than Basic was receiving.

Customers will need to push the reset button on their modems from Time Warner. If the modem doesn't have a reset button, unplug the modem, wait at least 10 seconds, then plug it back in and restart your computer.

Time Warner said the bump in speeds was possible in part because of investments in the network. It said it is increasing speeds without charging more as a "thank you." The move also comes as Google Inc. is beginning to provide its much anticipated Internet service in the Kansas City area and promising connection speeds 100 times faster than traditional service.

Michael Pedalty, a Time Warner spokesman, said the speed increase is across the entire company's service area and not a reaction to Google's activity in Kansas City.

He said faster speeds also are coming soon for Time Warner's Extreme and Ultimate services.

Some customers who recently increased their service to a faster speed would be able to drop down a level for that same speed. It may not be possible for customers who gained the faster speed as part of a package of services, such as phone, television and Internet.
