Olympics: Sawa, Yoshida come out for Tokyo 2020 PR event
(Japan Economic Newswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) TOKYO, Jan. 1 -- (Kyodo) _ Reigning FIFA Women's World Player of the Year Homare Sawa and three-time women's wrestling Olympic gold medalist Saori Yoshida came out Tuesday for a public relations event to promote Tokyo's bid for the 2020 Summer Olympics.
Sawa, who will act as ambassador to present Tokyo's candidature file to the International Olympic Committee this month, was on hand to address a sellout crowd at the National Stadium ahead of Kashiwa Reysol's clash against Gamba Osaka in the Emperor's Cup final at the annual New Year Day soccer match-up.
"If we are able to come together as one to be inspired at this stadium (in 2020), nothing would make us happier," said London Olympic silver medalist Sawa.
"Let's bring excitement to the bid to host the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics," said Yoshida.
Sawa and Yoshida hoisted a banner with the Tokyo bid slogan that literally translates, "Japan Needs the Power of These Dreams Now." Sawa will submit the file on Jan. 7 to the IOC at its headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland.
The file will detail Tokyo's plan to host the 2020 Games, which would be the city's second Summer Olympics after 1964. Tokyo is bidding against Madrid and Istanbul, two cities that have never hosted the Olympics.
