Cold temperatures coming

TRAVERSE CITY -- Bring on the cold.
That's Scott Beckstead's view, anyway. If it's the heart of winter, the weather might as well play along.
"We need the snow and cold weather up here. It's what we live here for," the Traverse City resident said. "If you want warmth, move south."
Most of this week should be pretty cold, Gaylord-based National Weather Service Meteorologist Nick Schwartz said. High temperatures shouldn't get past the high 20s, with lows in the teens.
"Temperatures will be a bit colder than what we've seen so far this winter," he said.
But the cold likely won't be accompanied by any major snowstorms, Schwartz said. The area will be "nickeled and dimed" with a few smatterings of lake-effect snowfall, he said, but nothing more.
Sledding, skiing and other traditional winter activities are in full swing, and the cold blast will be welcomed by area ice fishermen, who are now only able to fish select lakes.
Emil O'Brien, 18, of Traverse City, spent a few hours sledding with his cousins Monday afternoon. He doesn't like shoveling snow -- or winter in general -- but the season has its benefits.
"We live in Michigan, so you take what you can get," he said. "Personally, I'm not a big fan of the snow, but sledding is fun."
Temperatures are forecast to warm slightly after this week.
