Arrest made at Pinon Hills marijuana grow house

PINON HILLS, Jan 01, 2013 (Inland Valley Daily Bulletin - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department arrested an Adelanto man on Monday after discovering hundreds of marijuana plants inside what was thought to have been a vacant house.

Deputies arrested Alejandro Guadalupe Amarillas Quintero, 20, of Adelanto on suspicion of marijuana cultivation and booked him at Adelanto Detention Center. Deputies also seized 502 marijuana plants and what the Sheriff's Department described as an "advanced hydroponic growing set up" with a lighting array, fans, air conditioning units and a filtration system.

The Sheriff's Department discovered the grow house after Deputy Dominic Moody saw who he considered to be a suspicious man about 11 a.m. Monday while patrolling Ponderosa Road in Pinon Hills. Moody saw the man, later determined to be Quintero, walking around what he believed to be a vacant house. Quintero walked inside the house when Moody approached to investigate.

Quintero greeted the deputy at the front door, but according to the Sheriff's Department, could not explain why he was inside the Ponderosa House. Moody smelled a strong marijuana odor from the front door and decided to detain Quintero while the Sheriff's Narcotics Division Marijuana Eradication Team arrived to investigate the house.

Deputies' search of the house led to not only the discovery of hundreds of marijuana plans and a hydroponics system, but also evidence of electricity theft via a bypass system that reportedly created a high risk of electrocution and fire. Southern California Edison employees disconnected the house's power.
