Lexmark acquires Minneapolis health care software company for $45 million [Lexington Herald-Leader]

(Lexington Herald-Leader (KY) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Jan. 03--Lexington-based Lexmark International announced Wednesday it has acquired a health care software company.

It's the sixth such technology acquisition since mid-2010 for the printer company, which has expanded into more computer software and services.

Lexmark paid $45 million for Minneapolis-based Acuo Technologies, which markets its Universal Clinical Platform software to hospitals and other health care providers.

Ken Woodruff, Lexmark's health care industry director, said the software helps remedy a now-common situation of doctors finding it difficult to get a "unified view of everything about a particular patient." With this software, medical images, such as X-rays, MRIs and so forth, will be easily accessible regardless of whether they were in different databases.

Acuo Technologies will be integrated into Lexmark's Perceptive Software unit.

Kansas-based Perceptive Software started the company's recent series of software acquisitions when it was purchased in mid-2010. Perceptive's technology takes information in a variety of ways -- a scanned document, perhaps, or a typed-in form -- and makes it accessible in a company's work flow.

Since that time, Lexmark has acquired other firms and folded their offerings into the Perceptive Software division. Among them was software that automates the process of collecting data from invoices.

"Perceptive was already managing all kinds of other related content like prescriptions, progress notes, medical orders and that sort of thing," Woodruff said, noting the offering is now more robust.

"This is really about improving the quality of care and reducing costs, which you hear a lot about in the news these days," Woodruff said. "This is one of the key enabling technologies to make that possible." Scott Sloan: (859) 231-1447. Twitter: @HeraldLeaderBiz ___ (c)2013 the Lexington Herald-Leader (Lexington, Ky.)
