BRIEF: CMPD officer charged with DWI on New Year's Eve

Jan 02, 2013 (The Charlotte Observer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer was arrested in Union County on driving while impaired and other charges on New Year's Eve, troopers said.

Matthew Thompson, 44, was driving his Ford Explorer on Rocky River Road around 6:05 p.m. when a state trooper stopped him for swerving.

The trooper determined Thompson had been drinking, First Sgt. M.R. Leach said. Leach declined to comment on whether Thompson failed a field sobriety test or on his blood alcohol content. No one else was in the vehicle at the time of Thompson's arrest.

He's charged with driving while impaired, operating a vehicle with no insurance, operating a vehicle with an expired registration and driving left of center, according to court records. His license has been revoked for 30 days.

Thompson works in the Freedom Division in northwest Charlotte. He's been with the department since 1990. Thompson has been placed on administrative leave following his arrest, a CMPD spokeswoman said. It was unclear whether he is being paid while on leave.

CMPD is also conducting an internal investigation.

Attempts Wednesday to reach Thompson were unsuccessful.
