Home invader hit man on head, police say

ANCHORAGE, Jan 02, 2013 (Anchorage Daily News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Anchorage police are investigating an alleged home invasion in Fairview late Tuesday in which a man hit another man in the head before stealing a gun, some cash and a phone.

It was sometime before midnight when the suspect, a man thought to be in his late 20s, knocked on a door in the 1400 block of 12th Avenue, according to police spokeswoman Dani Myren. The suspect asked a man living there if he could use a phone, and the resident let him inside, Myren said.

"The victim saw what appeared to be a small handgun," Myren said. "(He) at one point retrieved his own firearm, but the suspect took it away from him. He doesn't remember anything after that." When the victim awoke, it was Wednesday morning and he was bleeding from his head, Myren said. The man thought at first that he'd been shot, but he soon realized the suspect must have hit him in the head with an object, Myren said. He didn't remember anything after having his handgun taken, and it's unclear if the suspect threatened him or made any demands, the police spokeswoman said.

A small amount of money, the handgun and a phone were missing from the home, Myren said. Early police reports did not indicate what type of phone was stolen, and police are not saying how much money was taken. Myren declined to publicly identify the victim.

The victim called his brother, then called police at about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Myren said. He gave what Myren described as "vague" information about the suspect: possibly Hispanic, 5-foot-8 or 5-foot-9, and 180 to 190 pounds.

Myren said the case has been forwarded to the police department's Investigations Unit, but patrol officers are not actively looking for anyone in particular.

"Based on the vague suspect information, as far as I know, there's no specific individual that they're looking for," Myren said.
