Braves caravan coming here

Jan 05, 2013 (The Daily Citizen - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The 2013 Atlanta Braves Country Caravan rolls into Dalton on Jan. 28.

The event, which features Braves players and coaches, will be at Academy Sports and Outdoors on Shugart Road from 3:30 to 5 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

"We look forward to our annual Braves Country Caravan as a time to provide our fans throughout the Southeast an opportunity to interact with our manager, coaches and players, and to express our gratitude for their loyalty and support," Braves President John Schuerholz said in a press release. "This is one special way we can show our appreciation to some of the most passionate and dedicated baseball fans in the world." The Caravan runs Jan. 22 through Feb. 2. During this two-week event, Braves players, coaches, broadcasters and front office employees will travel approximately 3,000 miles to five states. The Braves will "interact with fans and participate in a variety of community events." The members of the Braves organization attending will be announced later. The Caravan hasn't stopped in Dalton for a public appearance in several years. In the 1980s and 1990s, the Caravan regularly stopped at Walnut Square Mall.

In February 2010, the Caravan stopped off at Dalton Middle School for about an hour as the tour made its way to Nashville. There students and staff heard from and met then-rookie outfield Jason Heyward, who has since become one of the Braves' biggest stars. Also in attendance were utility player Brooks Conrad, third base coach Brian Snitker, General Manager Frank Wren, several front office personnel and mascot Homer the Brave.
