PUC to examine superstorm Sandy preparedness
Jan 05, 2013 (The Citizens' Voice - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
The Pennsylvania Utility Commission has scheduled a forum Thursday to examine the state's electric utilities' planning measures in anticipation of superstorm Sandy in late October.
The hearing also will address the various utilities' communication with customers and efforts to restore service during and after the storm, according to a news release from the PUC.
According to the PUC, more than 1.8 million Pennsylvania residents lost power during the course of the storm, which struck the state on Oct. 29. Ninety percent of the affected electric customers had power restored by Nov. 3, according to the PUC. More than 100,000 of those left in the dark as a result of the storm were customers of PPL Electric Utilities, which serves 28 counties including the majority of Northeastern Pennsylvania.
By about 11 p.m. Oct. 29, 3,827 customers were without power in Lackawanna County; 6,281 in Luzerne County; 23,651 in Monroe County; 11,177 in Pike County; 165 in Susquehanna County; and 8,943 in Wayne County.
First Energy also had 15,098 customers without power in Pike County; 15,007 in Monroe County; 20 in Susquehanna County; five in Wayne County; and 52 in Wyoming County that night.
By Nov. 3, 85 percent of PPL customers statewide had their power restored, though about 18,000 customers in the Poconos and other areas of Northeast Pennsylvania remained without power.
The hearing, which will be held in the Commonwealth Keystone Building, 400 North St., Harrisburg, will run from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., according to the PUC.
