Water main work causes traffic detours
Jan 05, 2013 (Sun Journal - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Ongoing work to the Neuse Boulevard water main will require a street closure Saturday night.
Jordan Hughes, New Bern city engineer, said the First Street intersection will be closed from 11 p.m. Saturday until 11 a.m. Sunday.
"During this work period, the contractor will be completing all of the required water main construction and installing the asphalt pavement repair," Hughes said in a statement. "Once the pavement repair has been completed, the intersection will be re-opened to through traffic."
Last week the contractor worked to make pavement repairs to several areas between First Street and Simmons Street. Most of that repair work was finished Friday evening and should help to improve the travel surface along that section of the project, Hughes said.
"In looking at the next seven to 10 days it appears that the weather is going to be favorable and the contractor is hoping to complete as much of the construction as possible during this window," Hughes said. "Beginning (Saturday) night the contractor will be working to install the water main improvements through the Neuse Boulevard/Simmons Street intersection."
During the closure at the First Street and Neuse Boulevard intersection, detours will be put in place to assist motorists in navigating around the work zone. Properties located between the work zone and road closure barricades will be assessable to local traffic only, but no through traffic will be permitted through the work zone, Hughes said.
"As always, the city urges motorists and pedestrians to be alert and cautious at any time when traveling near the work zone," he said.
