Wing welcomes new senior enlisted man
Jan 06, 2013 (St. Joseph News-Press - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
For seven years, Gayla Sullivan has been the 139th Airlift Wing's Command Chief Master Sergeant.
"She's been a role model and champion for diversity," said Col. Mike Pankau, the Wing's commander.
As the senior enlisted person for the entire Wing, Mrs. Sullivan has been a notable figure, providing advice and guidance to the Wing's command structure and all of the enlisted personnel. As more than 2,000 members of the Wing deployed overseas, she was one of the last to see them off and one of the first to see them return.
Mrs. Sullivan became the Wing's Command Chief Master Sergeant in December 2005. She has been a liaison with the Wing commander for the enlisted force.
On Saturday, Mrs. Sullivan was awarded a Meritorious Service Medal for the completion of her command duties. And she passed the Wing's flag to Mark Frye, who became the new Command Chief Master Sergeant.
"I have confidence in his leadership ability," Mr. Pankau said.
Mr. Frye is a 1976 Central High School graduate who joined the Guard in 1988. During his 24 years of service, Mr. Frye has completed numerous overseas deployments.
Also on Saturday, a navigator from the 139th Airlift Wing, Lt. Col. Todd Mitton, was promoted to the rank of colonel.
Since 2010, Mr. Mitton has served as the Missouri National Guard's director of air operations. The colonel works closely with the 157th Air Operations Group, the 131st Bomb Wing and the 139th Airlift Wing, establishing relationships and ensuring preparedness for Missouri's air units to meet future needs.
"We're spending a lot of time developing concepts that are transferable to virtually any emergency disaster," Mr. Mitton said.
The colonel continues to regularly fly with the 139th in St. Joseph.
