Japan's game market shrinks for 5th straight year in 2012

(Japan Economic Newswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) TOKYO, Jan. 7 -- (Kyodo) _ Japan's video game market, combining both hardware and software sales, dropped for the fifth straight year in 2012, due partly to price falls in game consoles, game magazine publisher Enterbrain Inc. said Monday.

Although the sales fell 1.1 percent to 449.2 billion yen, the size of the overall domestic market remained at almost the same level as 2011, supported by robust sales of Nintendo Co.'s 3DS portable gaming device and software for 3DS, Enterbrain said.

Of the total, sales of hardware products totaled around 178.0 billion yen, down 1.0 percent, while that of software declined 1.3 percent to 271.2 billion yen, it said.

Nintendo 3DS, the best-selling game console in 2012, sold about 5.63 million units.
