Rain rolls in but drier times ahead for valley
Jan 07, 2013 (The Modesto Bee - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
CENTRAL VALLEY -- Wet weekend weather will give way to dry but overcast days with temperatures dropping below freezing by Thursday.
It rained 1.24 inches in downtown Modesto from Saturday through Sunday evening, bringing the season's rainfall totals to 7.86 inches, according to the Modesto Irrigation District. That's more than halfway to the average season total of about 12 inches, and much of the storm season lies ahead.
Dodge Ridge Ski Resort got about 4 inches of snow while Bear Valley got half that much.
Soft earth caused by the rain proved troublesome for some Stanislaus County drivers Sunday.
A man who pulled over on the shoulder along Terminal Avenue at Claus Road got stuck in the mud when his car slid into a ditch. The car had to be towed out.
California Highway Patrol officer Don Davis said it happens often after a good rain. He advised motorists against pulling onto soft shoulders, especially in rural parts of the county.
Just after noon, the roots of a 75-foot pine tree no longer could stay planted in the wet soil at a home at Hatch and Mountain View roads in Hughson.
The fallen tree blocked the southbound lanes on Mountain View and part of the northbound lanes, too. The CHP provided traffic control while Stanislaus County public works employees including Bill Martins used chain saws to cut the tree into manageable pieces to haul out of traffic. The road was blocked for about three hours.
Martins earlier in the day closed about a half -mile of Whitmore Avenue at Montpellier Road because of flooding. He anticipated that it would reopen early this morning.
The forecast for the beginning of the week calls for foggy nights and overcast days with highs in the mid-50s and lows in the upper 30s. Nighttime lows are expected to drop below freezing by Thursday as the fog and clouds dispel.
