China supports improvement of ROK-DPRK relations: spokesman

BEIJING, Jan 10, 2013 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- A Foreign Ministry spokesman said Thursday that China supports efforts made by the Republic of Korea (ROK) and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to improve bilateral relations.

Spokesman Hong Lei made the remarks at a daily press briefing, adding that China has consistently supported the use of dialogue to improve ties between both sides.

The improvement of their relations is in line with the interests of all people on the Korean Peninsula and will be conducive to maintaining regional peace and stability, Hong said.

Park Geun-hye was elected president of the ROK on Dec. 19, 2012, becoming the country's first female president. Following the election, some observers said the country may relax sanctions on the DPRK so as to ease tensions between the two sides.
