Phone app puts valuable college information in a student's pocket [Birmingham Post (England)]
(Birmingham Post (England) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) An innovative smartphone app has been developed specifically to help learners to navigate through the extremely active college experience.
Students can use the app to access through their medium of choice - the mobile phone - day to day college information, vouchers to gain discounts on student facilities, keep on track with assignment deadlines and much, much more.
There are also many benefits for the educational establishments, which include improving the learner experience through better communication between student and college and saving money on print costs by supplying the information via the phone instead.
The app has been developed by Birmingham-based Smartphone Media, which has more than 100 apps in the Apple App Store and Android- based Google Play store. The company specialises in the education sector and has designed and developed this app following extensive research with colleges it works with nationwide.
Other features include an enrichment section and how learners can make the most of their time in further education, a safeguarding handbook, a section offering advice on funds and finance, term dates, information on college facilities such as library opening hours, push alerts to let students know about room changes or the closure of the college due to bad weather and links to college social networking sites.
Students will also be able to access via the app bus and train routes and timetables to and from the college, report an absence, take part in voting polls, receive tips and help on writing a curriculum vitae and job interviews.
A type of satellite navigation system, currently in development, will help new learners or visitors to find their way around the centre too via their phone.
Smartphone Media business development director Neil Harding said: "Mobile technology is the way young people access the web now. The new expectation is that you can connect at any time, and that's where the technology is headed. With this app they will always have the college in their pocket and information they require at the touch of a button.
"I have spoken to many people who work in the FE sector, from principals to learner services managers and they tell me there is a real need for the features we have developed. The benefit to the college is two-fold. It improves the learner experience and keeps their customers informed with bang up to date information whilst helping them to save money by printing much less than they do currently."
