BRIEF: Commonwealth Stadium by the numbers

Jan 11, 2013 (Lexington Herald-Leader - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- 40 UK has called Commonwealth Stadium its home for 40 football seasons.

$12 million Construction of the stadium was completed in 1973 at a cost of $12 million. It had a seating capacity of 57,800. The stadium and parking areas rest on an 86-acre plot that was once part of the UK Experimental Station Farm Grounds.


$27.6 million In 1999, both ends of the stadium were enclosed, and 40 suites were built, 10 in each corner of the stadium. Additional features of the $27.6 million expansion included two new video boards, a new sound system, new scoreboards, additional restrooms and concession stands, and new concourse televisions.

2001 The playing area was named C.M. Newton Field in 2001, in honor of the former UK athletics director.

6,162 In 2011, at a cost of $6 million, new video and ribbon boards were installed, placing UK among the national leaders for largest amount of video square footage: 6,162 square feet.

67,942 The total number of seats in the stadium is 67,942. When media members and game workers are included, attendance can exceed 71,000.

256 The Wildcats have played 256 games at the stadium and have a record of 136-116-4 (a .539 winning percentage).
