BRIEF: Woman made up abduction story, city police say

Jan 11, 2013 (Reading Eagle - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Reading police said Thursday that a woman who claimed she was abducted at gunpoint from a city street Dec. 17 and left naked atop Mount Penn made up the entire story.

The 31-year-old has admitted she gave a false report, but investigators are withholding the reason why she made it up, said Sgt. John M. Solecki of the criminal investigations division.

He withheld the woman's name because charges are pending.

Her claim that she was kidnapped in southeast Reading alarmed the public and police, who invested a lot of manpower to investigate, Solecki said.

"We found some inconsistencies from her report right from the beginning," Solecki said. "We followed up on that and reviewed some video and none of that supported her story." The woman told police that another vehicle cut her off while she was parking and someone jumped in her vehicle, put a gun to her back and forced her to drive on Cotton Street, through Pendora Park and to the William Penn Memorial Fire Tower parking lot.

She claimed she was ordered to take off her clothes and was hit with a gun before being left alone in the woods.

She claimed her abductor wanted her to pay off a debt.
