Report reveals area politicians' campaign finances

Jan 12, 2013 (Star-News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Fourth quarter reports were due Thursday, bringing in the final tallies of campaign contributions for the 2012 New Hanover County Board of Commissioners race.

The reports filed this week reflect contributions received and expenses made between Oct. 21 and Dec. 31. It also shows how much each candidate has left over from their campaign.

Chairman Woody White raised a grand total of $118,805.85 over the course of his campaign -- by far the largest sum raised by any commissioner candidate this cycle.

White spent more than $114,000 on his campaign, most of this going toward television ads on Time Warner Cable and WWAY.

Vice Chairman Beth Dawson raised a total of $38,748.84 and Commissioner Jonathan Barfield ran the cheapest successful campaign raising a grand total of $13,309.

None of the now-commissioners spent all of the money they raised.

Dawson has $1,491.44 left over in her campaign fund. Barfield has $3,526.99 and White has $4,461.12 remaining.

Both Barfield and White planned to keep their account open to use for future elections.

"It makes more sense to leave it open than to close it and reopen for a possible future campaign," White said. "If I decide not to run in the future, I'll close it then, but I won't be making that decision for another three and a half years." "I'll let it sit there until I decide what I want to run for next," Barfield said. "You've got to be wise with your money. It comes in handy to have some already when you file. It helps you not to start from zero." Dawson could not be immediately reached for comment.

Campaign finance reports for all candidates can be found on the Board of Elections' website.
