Jan 13, 2013 (Richmond Times-Dispatch - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
A Chesterfield County police officer shot and killed a man early Sunday near the Chippenham Parkway and Hull Street Road intersection.
Police identified the man as Frankie Pitt, 45, of the 3700 block of Cottrell Road in Richmond. Pitt was wanted in connection with a robbery about 10 minutes earlier, police said.
According to police, the officer stopped around 3 a.m. for what he initially believed to be a disabled motorist on the onramp to southbound Chippenham Parkway at Hull Street Road.
Upon approaching the vehicle, the officer discovered the driver to be a suspect in the earlier robbery, police said.
The officer attempted to apprehend Pitt, but he resisted. A struggle ensued for the officer's handgun, police said. During the struggle, the officer fired the weapon, striking Pitt, who died at the scene.
The officer was treated and released for non-life threatening injuries and has been temporarily reassigned to a non-enforcement position while the incident is being investigated, police said.
Police continue their investigation and anyone with information should contact the Chesterfield Police at (804) 748-1251.
