Crisis Control Center, a United Way agency

This week's United Way agency is the Crisis Control Center. The Crisis Control Center aids victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking from four counties.
The center covers not only Bryan county but Atoka, Johnston and Marshall counties as well. The center cares mainly for women who have been victims of some kind of domestic abuse.
"Our main concern is our victim and her children," said Executive Director Norita Walker. To better protect victims, the center is in an undisclosed location although it does have a public office as well.
The Crisis Control Center's shelter houses 14 beds and is currently over capacity with 19 guests. Walker said they sometimes cannot accept a guest but will never turn them away.
In the case that a guest cannot be accepted into the shelter the center will find a shelter for the victim to go. "We'll find a place. We won't turn someone away in the middle of the night. They're in fear for their lives," said Walker.
The public office is located at 115 C North 12th Ave. in Durant and is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The center will aid men who have been victimized as well. While they cannot allow a man to stay in the shelter, the center will provide advocacy and help a man find the proper resources he needs.
The center has eight paid employees and 10 volunteers and interns. There are workers present at the center 24 hours a day.

What can Bryan County do to help the Crisis Control Center Walker said the best way to help the center is to give monetary donations to the United Way or directly to the center.
"It costs a lot of money to run a shelter," said Walker, "take the groceries you buy each month and times that by about 20."
The center will also accept food, clothing or toiletries. Walker said the center is willing to accept any form of donation.
Walker also said she encourages the community to give to the United Way because she feels all of the United Way agencies are very important to the community.
