(Telegraph-Herald (Dubuque, IA) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) BASEBALL Loras Baseball Winter Training Camp returns to action Feb. 9, Feb. 16 - The Loras College baseball program's winter training camp will return to action Feb. 9 for players ages 12-18 and Feb. 16 for players ages 7-11. Both clinics will feature defense in the morning and hitting in the afternoon.


Cost is $30 per session.

BASKETBALL Granny Basketball holding 8th annual Jamboree - The Cedar Rapids Granny Basketball team the Sizzlers will host the annual Granny Basketball Jamboree on Jan. 26 at Trinity Lutheran School, 1393 1st Avenue SW in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The Jamboree will take the floor at 9 a.m. A snow date is set for Feb. 2.

Goodwill donations will be accepted at the door. All proceeds will go to the Bridge Haven in Cedar Rapids. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend.

The newly formed Dubuque team, the Courtside Cuties, will participate in the day-long event along with 19 other teams from Iowa and Minnesota.

The Dubuque Courtside Cuties will be playing at halftime of the University of Dubuque at Loras women's basketball game on Wednesday, Jan. 23. The game is at 6 p.m.

Granny Basketball originated in Lansing, Iowa in 2005 with four teams and has been growing steadily ever since. Participants must be at least 50 years old and dressed in 1920s attire in order to participate.

This version of six-on-six basketball is played in three courts according to vintage 1920s rules. There is no running, no jumping and no physical contact allowed. Players may also not reveal any flesh-lest they be assessed the dreaded "flesh foul." For more information about Granny Basketball, go to www.grannybasketball.com.

Officials needed for Winter Iowa Games - Volunteers are needed to officiate Winter Iowa Games basketball contests Jan. 26-27. Games run 8 a.m.-8 p.m. both days.

Officials do not need experience, no certification, no license, just a couple of hours and a willingness to help today's youth. Men and women of high school age and beyond are welcome. Officials will receive Winter Iowa Games T-shirts and lunch.

Don Kelbick clinic playing March 15-17 at Courtside - Don Kelbick, a famed NBA development coach for such pro stars as Joe Johnson, Raja Bell and Carlos Boozer, will conduct a three-day skills camp for players 12 and over March 15-17 at Courtside in Dubuque.

Players registering before Jan. 31 will receive a 20 percent discount. The clinic is limited to the first 50 players.

Bellevue Community Y tournament playing Feb. 22-24 - The Bellevue Community Club's youth basketball tournaments will play Feb. 22-24 at Bellevue High School. The tournaments are open to boys and girls teams in grades 3-8. The boys tournament will play Feb. 22-23. The girls tournament will play Feb. 24.

The tournament is open to school teams only. AAU teams are not allowed.

Cost is $100. All teams are guaranteed three games.

Registration open for 2013 Dubuque Leisure Service Alumni Basketball Tournaments - Registration is open for the Dubuque Leisure Services'19th annual Alumni Basketball Tournaments playing in March. Registration materials can be obtained by emailing the DLS at parkrec@cityofdubuque.org or calling at 563-589-4263.

The Modern Division Tournament (open to players graduating in 2003 or since) will play March 15-17, the women's division (open to players graduating from any year) will play March 15-17 and the Classic Division (players graduating in 2002 or earlier) and Masters Divisions (graduating in 1992 or earlier) will play March 22-24 at locations throughout the city.

Entry fee is $68 per team. Entry deadline is Tuesday, March 12.

Cardinal Cage Classic playing Jan. 19 - The Maquoketa Athletic Boosters will hold their annual girls youth basketball tournament for girls in grades 4-8 at Maquoketa High School. There is a three- game guarantee.

The tournament is limited to school-based teams, no all-star teams. All upper divisions will have certified officials. Entry fee is $130.

BOWLING Cherry Lanes hosting Dubuque 700 Club Invitational Doubles Tournament Feb. 3 - Cherry Lanes will host the 20th annual Dubuque 700 Club Invitational Doubles Tournament on Sunday, Feb. 3 at the lanes inside Diamond Jo Casino. The tournament opens at 11 a.m.

Cost is $30 per team. One bowler must be a member in good standing of the Dubuque 700 Club and one bowler must have never bowled a 700 series.

CHEER AND DANCE PROGRAMS Clarke University youth cheer and dance clinic performing Feb. 2 - Clarke University will hold a youth cheer and dance clinic for kids in kindergarten through sixth grade on Saturday, Feb. 2 at the Kehl Center. The clinic will run from 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

Cost is $25 and includes lunch and a T-shirt. Kids need to be registered by Jan. 17 to ensure a T-shirt. Walk-in registrations are welcome.

DUBUQUE LEISURE SERVICES Dubuque Leisure Services Allison-Henderson Center Open House on Tuesday - The Dubuque Leisure Services Department will host an Open House for parents and children Tuesday morning from 8-10:30 a.m. and/ or 5-6:30 p.m. at the Allison-Henderson Center at 1500 Loras Boulevard.

Everyone is welcome to join us and meet the instructors (Susan and Teresa) and participate in some of the fun activities scheduled for the upcoming winter and spring months. Guests will be introduced to such programs as Preschool Playgroup, Discover Playschool, It's A Small World and much more.

Hempstead Pool opens for public swimming - The Hempstead High School Pool will be open for public swimming on Sunday afternoons from 1-4 p.m. Adult lap swim/water walking is from 4-5 p.m. The 2013 winter/spring season will run through Sunday, April 28 (excluding March 31).

Admission rates are: 50 cents for toddlers ages 3 and younger; $1.25 youth, ages 4 through 17 and senior citizens and $3 for adults ages 18 and older.

Swimmers'2012 season passes are effective through May 1.

Hempstead Pool offering free Aqua Zumba classes - The Hempstead High School pool will host free Aqua Zumba classes this winter and spring. Aqua Zumba will swim from 11:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m. on Saturdays. Classes are open to swimmers ages 16 and older. Class fee is $50.

The Saturday morning classes will run Feb. 16 through Saturday, April 20 (no classes will be held on March 30 and April 6).

Swim lessons will be offered at 9, 9:40, 10:20 and 11 a.m.

Hempstead winter-spring evening swim lessons open on Feb. 20 - Dubuque Leisure Services will hold winter and spring evening swim lessons Wednesday nights beginning Feb. 20 and running through April 17 (no classes will be held on April 3). Swim lessons will be offered at 6 and 6:45 p.m.

Swim classes will meet for eight 35-minute lessons. Students should be at least six years old to register for swim classes. The following swim skill levels are offered: Beginner I, Beginner II, Advanced beginner I, Advanced beginner II, Intermediate and Swimmer.

DUBUQUE SPORTS COMPLEX DSC Hit Zone offering free video swing and pitching motion analysis sessions - DSC Hit Zone is offering free video swing or pitching motion analysis sessions with instant feedback.

The Hit Zone staff will video tape your son or daughters hitting, swing, or pitching motion and offer instant feedback from their video software program on what they are doing correctly or areas they need improvement in.

NATURE PRESENTATIONS DCCB to present Whitetails: Treasure, Trophy or Trouble Jan. 20 - The Dubuque County Conservation Board will present Larry Stone's free program Whitetails: Treasure, Trophy or Trouble on Saturday, Jan. 20 at the Swiss Valley Nature Center.

RUNNING Winter Iowa Games 5K running Jan. 27 - The 2013 Winter Iowa Games 5K Road Race will brave the elements Sunday, Jan. 27, on a new course.

The 5K's new starting location is Carver Elementary School in Dubuque. The race will begin at 9 a.m.

SKIING Snowflake Ski Tournament returns to Westby, Wis. Feb. 1-2 - A star-studded field of jumpers will take the hills at the 90th annual Snowflake Ski Tournament Feb. 1-2 at Snowflake Ski Club in Westby, Wis. Over 20 jumpers from across the United States and up to a dozen foreign jumpers will challenge the 118-meter hill, which features the same engineering specifications used in Olympic competition.

The competition begins Friday at 7 p.m. Saturday's competition will begin at noon. A variety of activities including a Standing Long Jump, children's sledding, sleigh rides and helicopter rides will also be held.

Admission is $20 per person for the weekend. United States Armed Forces veterans will be admitted free.

Clarke clinics pitching, swinging this winter - Clarke University softball coach Jaclyn Salzwedel will conduct a series of clinics this winter at the Robert and Ruth Kehl Center. The remaining Clarke softball winter clinic schedule is: " cents A Beginner's Pitching Clinic will be held on Sunday, Jan. 20, from 9-10:30 a.m., while an Advanced Pitching Clinic will be conducted from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 20. Both clinics are open to students in grades 3-12. The Beginner's Clinic will include instruction on basic fundamentals and mechanics with a focus on pitch location, improving a fastball, and the changeup. The Advanced Clinic will focus on the changeup, curveball, riseball and dropball. The cost of the Beginner's Clinic is $45, while the Advanced Pitching Clinic fee is $55. TRACK AND FIELD Loras College Track & Field Learn By Doing Clinic running Jan. 20 - Loras College will host a Track & Field Learn By Doing Clinic for high school boys and girls as well as high school coaches on Sunday, Jan. 20 from noon-3 p.m. (high jump, shot put or long jump/triple jump) and from 3:30-6:30 (distance, pole vault or sprints/hurdles/ relays). The clinic will take place on Loras'indoor track in the Graber Sports Center.

Clinic cost for students is $40 per session or $65 for both sessions. For coaches, the cost is $40 for the whole day. The clinic will be run by the Loras College track & field coaching staff and athletes as well as coaches from other colleges and universities.
