Uber to launch taxi service in D.C. [Examiner, The (Wash., DC)]

(Examiner, The (Wash., DC) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Popular towncar provider Uber announced Monday that it would roll out a new service called UberTaxi, allowing customers to book a regular DC taxi with its Uber app for smartphones.

Legislation passed by the D.C. Council late last year allowed the towncar company to expand, Uber officials said in a blog post.

The new service will charge customers the regular taxi meter rate, plus a $2 dispatch fee, but customers can pay with their credit card via the phone app instead of the cash most taxi drivers usually demand, the company said.

The company warned that its taxis might be hard to come by at first.

"Supply will be limited at first. Many taxis don't fit Uber standards, so we are curating our supply pretty carefully," the company said on its blog post.
