CU-Boulder's online learning system down on Wednesday

Jan 16, 2013 (Colorado Daily - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The University of Colorado's online learning system, Desire2Learn, experienced an outage Wednesday, creating problems for faculty and students taking online and in-person classes this spring.

The system -- also known as D2L -- hosts the campus's online courses and supplemental resources for classes held in a traditional classroom, said Greg Stauffer, spokesman for CU's Office of Information Technology.

The university first adopted D2L, which is run by an outside company, in the fall of 2011. It runs simultaneously with the school's previous system, CULearn, which was run by the university. D2L replaced the old system this fall, making it the primary system used by professors and students on the Boulder campus.

Stauffer said this is not the first time CU has experienced an outage of the system.

"It's a fantastic resource for campus and there are hiccups from time to time, and unfortunately this one's coming at unfortunate time in our semester," he said.

The D2L outage followed an outage of the university-hosted MyCUInfo portal, which occurred Monday, on the first day of spring classes, and lasted until late Tuesday.

Stauffer said an email from D2L on Wednesday afternoon said the root problem had been detected and the company was planning to preform "emergency maintenance" Wednesday night. He did not know when the system would be functional again.

CU will be posting updates on the condition of D2L at colorado.edu/oit.
