OPINION: Ad calling attention to Obama daughters' vulnerability highlights NRA's desperation
Jan 16, 2013 (Detroit Free Press - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Just how far will the National Rifle Association go to protect the profits of the gun manufacturers and retailers who bankroll an ever-growing share of its operations
Those who imagined there were limits to the NRA's desperation got their comeuppance this morning when the gun industry's chief lobbying arm began airing a video ad that brands the president of the United States an "elitist hypocrite" for proposing new gun control measures while his own children enjoy armed Secret Service protection.
The ad, which debuted this morning on the NRA's website and on the Sportsman Channel, doubles down on the organization's contention that the solution to gun violence in schools is to put more guns in schools.
"Are the president's children more important than yours " the ad's narrator asks. "Then why is he skeptical about putting armed security in our schools, when his kids are protected by armed guards at their schools "
The ad goes on to note that while Obama has insisted that wealthy Americans pay a fair share of taxes, "he's just another elitist hypocrite when it comes to a fair share of security."
Of course, the elite marksmen who surround the Obama children are provided not by the private school they attend, but by the Secret Service, whose agents shadow members of the president's immediate family around the clock.
According to the NRA's logic, it is inconsistent for Obama to resist the unchecked proliferation of firearms while he and his family continue to enjoy the protection Congress has provided to every president for more than a century.
Politicians, journalists and even paid mercenaries who specialize in the politics of personal destruction generally know better than to exploit any politician's children in an attempt to advance their political agenda. The NRA's decision to put the Obama daughters front and center in its hysterical campaign to head off any new restrictions on firearms highlights the desperation of an industry that has subordinated even the most elemental demands of decency to its own mercantile interests.
