BRIEF: Man shot near Merchandise Mart loading dock

Jan 17, 2013 (Chicago Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A man suffered a graze wound to the head near a loading dock at the Merchandise Mart this morning.

The shooting occurred around 6 a.m. near near Orleans and Kinzie streets, according to Police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli.

The 47-year-old man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, officials said. A Chicago Fire Department spokesman said he was stable.

"He's doing fine, thank God,'' according to a friend of the victim who did not want his name used. "I've communicated with him today,'' he said. "It was a tragedy averted.'' The man was not robbed and police said the gunman reportedly did not say anything to the victim before firing.

After the shooting, the gunman ran west over the Kinzie Avenue bridge and then ducked under the bridge and fled north, Mirabelli said.

The man was wearing dark clothing and was described as between 20 and 40 years old, Mirabelli said.

Area North detectives were investigating.
